Five Sydney men convicted of plotting to commit violent jihad on Australian soil have been jailed for minimum terms ranging from 17 years and three months to 21 years. Justice Anthony Whealy sentenced the men today in the New South Wales Supreme Court sitting at Parramatta. Last October after four and a half weeks of deliberations, a jury found them guilty of the conspiracy which involved stockpiling explosive chemicals and firearms. The men, aged from 25 to 44, were each found guilty of conspiring to commit an act, or acts, in preparation for a terrorist act between July 2004 and November 2005. During the long-running trial, crown prosecutor Richard Maidment SC said the men were all devout Muslims driven by extremist beliefs to plot violent jihad in retaliation for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. They spent months working together to acquire chemicals, firearms and ammunition, and extremist literature found in their homes showed they had violent intent, he said. Justice Whealy said the criminality involved in the enterprise fell "only marginally short of the most serious case". The men's motivation had been an "intolerant, inflexible religious conviction" and each had contempt for the Australian Government, its leaders and laws, he said. The judge sentenced the 44-year-old man to a maximum term of 28 years with a non-parole period of 21 years and the 36-year-old man to a maximum of 27 years, with a non-parole period of 20 years and three months. A 40-year-old man and a 32-year-old man were each sentenced to a maximum of 26 years with a non-parole period of 19 years and six months, and a 25-year-old man was sentenced to a maximum of 23 years with a non-parole period of 17 years, three months. Justice Whealy said at the very least the men had intended to cause serious damage to property, but he could not conclude they had intended to kill people, although they were aware it was highly likely life would be endangered. He said the evidence did not establish the precise nature or target of the plot. "There is a wide range of material that has never been recovered," he also noted. None of the men had shown remorse and their prospects for rehabilitation were poor, the judge said. Relatives of some of the other men yelled out expletives as they heard the sentences via closed-circuit TV outside the court room at Parramatta in western Sydney. One woman began sobbing as two men shouted "fuck;" and left the building. The sister, who said she attended every day of the 10-month trial, said she believed her brother was innocent. "He was not planning any mass murder or terrorist attack," she said. "He is no extremist; the only extremists are people like ASIO, they go way deep." She said the jail sentences would only serve to strengthen the faith of the convicted men. They would not cause a divide between Muslims and non-Muslims in the Australian community, or incite any other Muslims to take extremist action.

Exterior of Bangkok Criminal Court STORYLINE A Thai court on Friday agreed to extradite a British man wanted in Australia for a drug smuggling plot that allegedly included a top Australian police investigator. James Henry Kinch was arrested in May last year and was one of 15 suspects detained under an Australian Federal Police operation carried out with authorities from the Netherlands, Thailand, Pakistan, Portugal and the United Kingdom. Those detained included a senior investigator from the New South Wales Crime Commission. Australian authorities allege the suspects conspired to ship more than 600 kilograms (1,320 pounds) of pseudoephedrine in a shipment of rice. The pseudoephedrine could be to make methamphetamine with a street value of about 108 (m) million US dollars. Speaking from behind bars in a Thai detention centre, Kinch denied the allegations and said they were "lies and distortion of the facts and the truth". "The truth is, there never is and there never was any drugs," he said. Kinch's lawyer said the ruling would be appealed. https://www.gotocourt.com.au/civil-law/declaring-bankruptcy What are the implications of bankruptcy? If you’re thinking about going bankrupt, seek legal advice before you do. There are consequences of bankruptcy. It extends for 3 years, so during that time you’re not allowed to own assets in your own name. Any income that you earn will be paid to the trustee. You’re allowed to own assets and income to a certain value. It’s not much, so things like tools of trade if you’re a tradesman, some personal and household items and you’re allowed to an income up to certain value but other than that, pretty much everything else goes to the trustee. For the 3 years that you are bankrupt, you won’t be able to be director of a company, own a business, you won’t be able to acquire assets, buy a house, anything of that nature. If you’re gifted an asset, someone gives you property, that will vest in the trustee as well. For the 3 years you’re bankrupt, you won’t have a lot to your name. And after bankruptcy, after you’re being declared bankrupt, a note about your bankruptcy is included on a national personal insolvency index and that means any future creditor can search to see if your name is listed as a default bankrupt, so you will show up on a credit check. Every time you apply to increase the value in your credit card, if you apply for a home loan, if you apply to buy a large screen TV from a furniture company and you want to apply for some credit, it will show up and it will probably affect ability to get credit for a lot of things.
